During the Christmas break (all 1 1/2 days of it for me!) I managed to test out the Google Calendar synchronization application for Blackberry. The application installation worked great. It was easy to download by just going to http://m.google.com/synch and accepting the download. Within a few minutes the application was ready and I logged into my Google calendar. It synchronized without any errors.
I then checked my Google Calendar online and nothing was there! Turns out this is the one flaw in the synchronization application. It doesn’t pick up your current Blackberry calendar. Once you have run the synchronization new events from either the Blackberry or the Google Calendar do show up and they synchronize both ways.
So overall this is a big win. I’ve wanted something to synchronize my calendar for some time. My Blackberry synchronized with Outlook via the Enterprise server and now I have an online version of my calendar that I can update etc.
I still don’t think this is enough to make the Google applications a hands down choice for replacing your Outlook and Exchange but with this step they are definitely getting closer to offering an easy way to get data you need. For users without Enterprise services this is a big win because they gain an online calendar that they can synchronize with their phone.
